The Archdiocese of Melbourne hosts the largest Catholic education system in the country, with 256 primary schools, 67 secondary schools and 6 special schools. Catholic schools in this Archdiocese educate approximately one in five metropolitan students.

Doxa School provides short-term placements for an intense education program. The aim of the program is to allow students to maintain contact with the mainstream schools.

(i)                               Larmenier is a non-residential school and centre for primary-aged children who are experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. A therapeutic program is offered to the child and the family and is an integral part of the program. The children are withdrawn for a limited period and then re-integrated into regular schools or appropriate placements.

(ii)                             Follow up support is provided for teachers, children and families after a child is re-integrated into the regular school.

(iii)                            Larmenier also offers support to school staff who are dealing with children experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. Family counselling is also available if the families are willing and/or desire assistance.

MacKillop Family Services is a shared ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of St Joseph, providing special education programs as part of general welfare services.

St Augustine’s is a specialist school that caters for young people aged 12–15 years who have social, emotional and behavioural issues. Young people attend the program to develop relevant skills and knowledge to assist in their transition to further education training and/or employment. Referrals are from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), government and non-government schools, and a range of community welfare agencies.

St Helen’s is a specialist primary school program that caters for children aged 5–12 years who have social, emotional and behavioural issues. St Helen’s provides a full-time education program for children to assist in their return to the mainstream education settings. St Mary’s College works in partnership with four schools: Holy Trinity Primary School in Wantirna South, St John’s Regional College in Dandenong, Aquinas College in Ringwood and Marymede Catholic College in South Morang.

 

St Mary’s College, working in partnership with the four schools listed, is a day school catering for the educational and social needs of hearing impaired students. Teachers of the Deaf teach students on an individual or small group basis or support students within classes at the partner schools. They work to ensure students continue to develop language and communication skills and have access to the mainstream curriculum.

St Paul’s College provides educational opportunities for students aged 5–18 with intellectual, multiple and sensory disabilities including autism. A school nurse also supports those students who have complex medical needs.

 

Learning opportunities are enhanced with a transdisciplinary approach comprising physiotherapy, speech pathology, music therapy, hydrotherapy and a specialist art and drama program.

 

A bridging program is also offered which is specifically designed for Prep-aged children who require additional preparation in readiness for school.
