WHAT IS CREATE YOUR OWN FUTURE?

Create Your Own Future is an initiative of the National Disability CoordinationOfficer (NDCO) program. It seeks to provide students with a disabilityexperiential learning opportunities to develop their personal and employability skills, and empower them to create their own future aspirations.

The course is aimed at Year 11 and 12 students with disability who have the potential for employment and/or further training. The program builds resilience by emphasising employability skill sets such as goal setting and problem solving. Industry visits and structured workplace learning also feature.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Create Your Own Future employs a similar structure to VET in School Programs (VETiS). It draws on competencies from the Certificate 1 in Transition Education and Certificate 1 in Work Education and places emphasis on flexibility and experiential learning using eLearning and current learning and teaching practice.  Students are released from their schools to participate in the program on Wednesday afternoons in a TAFE environment.

The course covers four areas:

  • Building Resilience for the Future
Developing skills in financial literacy, problem solving, conflict resolution, goal setting and achievement, stress management and responding to change.
  • Orientation to Work
Including job search techniques, industrial visits, vocational tasters, planning and preparing for a changing employment market, career awareness and exploration, matching skills and interests to employment and further training options.
  • Workplace Learning
Young people will have the opportunity to access applied learning via structured workplace learning
  • Learning in VET
Including eLearning / ePortfolio exploration and developing, integrated employability skills, everyday literacy and numeracy

FEEDBACK TO DATE

The response from young people to date has been overwhelmingly positive. Feedback has included:

“I have enjoyed being more independent. It’s different from school. I like the TAFE environment. I like meeting new people.”

“I have enjoyed ‘Create Your Own Future’ because I have met new people whom I have become friends with, I have become more independent by taking the train to TAFE and I feel more comfortable at TAFE than school.”

“I did some research on the computer about jobs and compiled research questions to find out what makes people happy at work and we have started planning excursions.”

“I learnt how a work place is supposed to be safe for all the workers.”

“We talked about different careers and finding out some jobs for me to do.”

“I have learnt about what unions are and what they do, I have also learnt about the workplace and what the rules and responsibilities are. I have worked on some personal goals to do with work. I have also done job investigations.”

It is anticipated that this initiative will continue and be expanded beyond 2011 to accommodate a larger cohort of young people. For a program outline, enrolment form, or for further information about Create Your Own Future, please contact:
