Certificate I in Work Education

This is a course that is conducted in most TAFE Institutes in Victoria and may be suitable for students with disabilities, particularly those with learning needs associated with intellectual and / or learning disability and those with challenging social/psychological behaviours. TAFE Institutes encourage good links with specialist and mainstream schools and other support services in order to effectively service prospective and current students.

Although there are other modes available, the Certificate I in Work Education course typically runs for two years full-time and prepares students for employment and / or further education and enhances students’ communication and academic skills. The entrance guidelines for the Certificate I in Work Education may vary slightly from one TAFE Institute to another however, in general, applicants:

• Must be of a minimum working age
• Have specific learning needs, possibly associated with intellectual, learning and/or psychological disability
• Have the potential to benefit from the program
• Have the potential and motivation for employment and/or further training

The course structure consists of core modules of 800 hours and 400 hours of vocational electives chosen from areas such as Office/Retail, Hospitality, Arts, Manufacturing and Automotive.  Work placements are also incorporated into the course.

It is advisable to check with the course coordinator at the relevant TAFE Institute about fees for the Certificate I in Work Education.

Important Note

Please note that the Work Education Units and Disability Liaison Units within TAFE Institutes operate under different structures and funding arrangements. Work Education students are provided with extensive support and assistance within the course and therefore do not need to register for support from the Disability Liaison Unit.
